Intentional eBay Bid Interference forcing lost Snipe bids

Cricket Performance Issues

Cricket uses automation with Windows and IE to do its job. If you are having performance issues and or you wish to speed up and improve your eBay experience dramatically and make Cricket more dependable Go HERE and follow the steps.

Double Back Up Snipe Bidding

A new feature introduced with the 3.3x version of Cricket Sniper. You now have the option to subscribe at a reduced rate for the first to a Web Based Sniping service that Cricket can interface with. With double back up Snipe bidding you are able to protect your Snipe bids like never before. The odds of a Snipe failure go down to nearly a zero. In addition you have all the benefits of both styles of bidding. You can set a Snipe with Cricket alone, with the web service for example if you go on vacation or you can set the Snipe with both programs for the ultimate Snipe Bid insurance.

To try the service I can get you signed up for a three (3) week unlimited use trial period for $3.95 with no points or extra fees. Paid Cricket users are offered a very special discount to try out the feature for the first year. More information is HERE and you can order the service via the above link.

Operating System Reinstalls

Have you recently reinstalled Windows 95, 98 or 98SE out of the box, reinstalled CJ and CJ is not working correctly? The above operating systems represent OLD technology out of the box for lack of a better way of saying it! You need to do some serious Windows updating to bring the operating system up to speed.

See the next topic for Database problems and Cricket.

Cricket Suddenly Not Working

Have you installed CJ and suddenly some other program that uses a database is not working correctly.. you may need to install MDAC to address backward compatibility issues with the Microsoft JET database engine.

Cricket 4x Version

Cricket Jr 4.0 is on hold until further notice. With recent Ebay changes and a foreseen update that I believe will dramatically affect Sniping it has become too difficult to maintain both programs. I believe it best to keep the work horse Sniper 3x going until I see what changes are next at Ebay.

Installing Cricket

The program installer not working as expected after downloading? To keep the download smaller Cricket does not ship with some common runtime files that Windows uses to run the language Cricket is programmed in. The latest operating systems come with these runtime files. If the Cricket installer does not work, you may need these files installed from Microsoft first.

When installing Cricket Programs the Windows Installer may balk about some files being outdated on your computer and will attempt to update them. This update will fail and the only work around is to update your Windows Operating System with the latest Microsoft Updates and this will include updating to their latest Internet Browser.

When installing Cricket program you may be prompted about files being updated being older then current files on your computer. Choose to keep your newer files. More

Uninstalling

Always uninstall the program via Control Panel add/remove programs. Never simply delete the program from your operating system. When the uninstaller runs you may be prompted to keep some file that are no longer believed to be in use. Typically you respond with a no unless you know for sure the file is still in use. If later after allowing the uninstaller to remove the files another program malfunctions simply reinstall the program that is malfunctioning. The reason for the trouble is a misaligned shared file counter.

Cricket Sniper: Update 3.3.18 is available for download.

March 15, 2004:

Safe2Bid: Changes on the Ebay site continue to affect Safe2Bid with 2 out of 3 features. I continue to work on modifying the Cricket Sniper engine to over-come the blocking of Safe2Bid feedback submissions by Ebay and the recent Ebay changes to the feedback format.

Safe2bid can still Shill check sellers. To do this, uncheck the feedback check boxes in the main screen.

Due to on ongoing site remodel Status messages from March 15 back to Jan 20 are gone! Below is an older back up.

January 20, 2004:

I've created a page that should explain away a lot of things and what may be really going on.

Safe2Bid: I have confirmed there has been a change on the Ebay feedback pages that is causing Safe2Bid to abort the Feed Back check feature. I am at this point determining the extent of the change and will implement fixes as the problems are discovered. Safe2Bid Shill Bid check feature IS operational at this time. See the August 10, 2003 and the November 20, 2003 Safe2Bid status notes for more information. As soon as I get the Cricket Sniper new engine stabilized I will be installing a modified version of this engine into the Safe2Bid program.

Cricket Sniper: Testing of the new Snipe engine is nearly complete and I am offering the new Cricket as a demo with a small caveat

With approximately 240 testers running the program for the last several weeks I have about 50 that are reporting regularly with quite a few reporting multiple times a day. With the latest two updates to the new Snipe Engine there have been 16 failures and 84 successes.

A success is defined as a bid being submitted on time without problems but the bid may or may not have won the item. Over 90% of the successes are 100% successes with individual testers. Less then 10 % of the testers have reported at least one failure with the rest being successes. For example a tester may have 10 successes and less then 1 failure to report. About 80% of the testers fall into this group.

A failure is defined as a bid not being submitted due to a malfunction with the new Snipe engine. Of the 100% of the testers reporting a consistent failure about 50% if the failures are 100% consistent. The other half are reporting more failures then successes. About 20% fall into the consistent failure group.

In the last two days I have narrowed down the problem and within the next two updates should have Cricket back to its normal dependable self.

There is a small percentage in this 20% group (just under 5%) that have taken advantage of the optional Double Bid Back Up feature in the program and no matter the failure rate with Cricket they report 100% success with the Snipe web service Cricket interfaces with.

This means that you stand a very good chance to be one of the Cricket users that will have up to 100% success. Thus I am providing the program as a marketable demo feeling confident that the greater majority will not have mission critical problems. I am happy to offer again Cricket to the general public and thank everybody for their incredible patience while I revamped the program to deal with ongoing and possible future changes on Ebay. Should you experience trouble with the new Cricket do not hesitate to email me for support.

December 31, 2003

It's Cricket's Birthday this month. Cricket is 6 years old now and is still the strongest Sniper program that exists.

Cricket remains down over Ebay changes and my installing a new Snipe Engine. I continue to test the program. I do not have many issues with the program however I cannot replicate myself what issues there are. I am very dependent on those that have issues to help get them resolved. The holidays proved to be very slow in getting testing done. I could use more testers to speed things up.

If you are interested in testing this what we do:

  1. Install and run the program.

  2. Retrieve Auctions as if you are preparing to set up a Snipe bid.

  3. Set Fake bids to see if the program is going to behave as expected on your computer.

  4. Set a few real bids with you being present to help the program if it runs into any problems.

  5. Send Snipe logs, Error logs if applicable and your observances.

  6. Cricket has a built in debugger feature that can be used to trace and narrow down problems.

All of the problems I have seem to be system specific meaning either it works great or it isn't working at all on a user's machine. I have to learn what the system specific issues are so that work-arounds can be implemented.

If you'd like to test the program, you must be a currently registered user. Email me and provide your current version number or whether you have the program at all. I'll provide you with a link to a patch or the full version.

How slow has it being going? Days go by without a report or I get one or two a day then all is quiet for a few days. I am not just sitting here waiting however I continue to test and tweak, find a bug here and there, add a new bug here and there :) etc.

Two days ago I pulled a special feature I had been working on out of the Cricket 4x Sniper. I am putting the feature  into 3x as a big thank you to an incredibly large group of Cricket users that are standing by me.

Several years ago the idea of Snipe Groups popped up and I went to work coming up with some business rules that would govern a Group Snipe. A Group Snipe is where you can tell the program to bid on a series of auction until it wins one or more of the items you put into the group.

I put the idea down because I felt there was a lot of risk involved. Mainly that risk was the program winning more then one of something. About 1.5 years ago I picked the idea up again and came up with ways to ensure as best I could that there wouldn't be any accidents with Group Sniping. Imagine winning 4 or 5 $400 computers when you only wanted 1!

So over the holidays I began implementing the Group Snipe feature into 3x. I am happy to report that it is working but it also needs some further testing.

December 18, 2003

Cricket was pulled down to make a revision to the new Snipe Engine. I will post again when I have it back up. I expect to run the last series of tests over the revision on Dec 19.

November 10, 2003

Safe2Bid continues to be updated. Again like Cricket changes internally are significant and taking some time.

August 14, 2003

Safe2Bid - A change was made on Ebay causing the program to not be able to pull down feedback owed in the Feedback Manager. An update is in the works. The change has to do with signing in and seems to be significant. The Shill Checking feature is not affected by the change.

July 7 2003

Cricket Jr - A planned update on the Ebay site occurred today. This update is significant and will require a full program update mostly in part because there are significant new features also included in this next Cricket Update that I timed to be release with this latest Ebay change.

The new Cricket 3x will be uploaded ASAP and I will notify via this page and via the program.

Your current version of Cricket will retrieve all data except for bid price. Click ignore for Cricket to check this site for update information that will tell you when the new Cricket is uploaded.

June 10 2003

Safe2Bid: Revision .21 has been uploaded. An Ebay change that resulted in Safe2Bid not being able to read bidder feedback ratings correctly has been fixed. From Help in the Safe2Bid menu click to update the program via the ezUpdater. When the update is available the Updater will indicate so.

May 05 2003

Cricket Software: A few reports of problems with McAffee v7 that was loaded from a Retail CD have been reported. After installing Cricket and then trying to run it the McAffee Windows Installer wants to run and when clicking cancel an error message pops up with ...browse.exe as the source of the problem. The problem has been determined to be a McAfee problem and there is a conflict with VB type programs. Contact McAfee support with the problem as they have a fix available. I have asked the customer that helped me work with McAfee support to send me the link to the download fix.

This problem also occurred with a Photo Suite program some months ago. I suspect that the issue lies with certain versions of the Windows Installer and the fix for any other program conflicts would be resolved by contacting support staff for the affected program.

April 29 2003

Cricket Power Chat: Ebay made several significant changes to the Chat forum. I am re-writing portions of the program to accommodate those changes, specifically the sign method using SSL. An update is forthcoming.

Does the Cricket Jr Standard Edition of your program Multi Snipe?

Yes. Snipes are rostered and activated as needed. By default the program will activate Snipe bid when there is 3 hours or less in the auction. When you set a snipe that goes beyond the default 3 hours they are simply rostered.

There is no limit to the number of Snipes you can set. Cricket does use a "list" format for Sniping like other programs.  A list format to me means as each Snipe comes up to be bid on in a list the program bids. Cricket instead uses a Snipe engine that treats each individual Snipe set as an independent object. This provides greater flexibility and control of the Snipe. In the list format, one Snipe malfunction can halt execution of the remaining Snipes below it. With Cricket's method this type of thing is prevented.

Cricket's Snipe engine is quite complex compared to other Snipe programs and uses a bit more memory. The Snipe engine is represented by a screen for each Snipe, thus the roster (in a list format) and an "activation" of one engine per Snipe demonstrates how the two methods are different. Each Snipe engine as represented by a Snipe screen uses just a bit more memory each time a Snipe is activated. To minimize the amount of memory used by a Snipe the activation period can be changed in Program Settings. The default is 3 hours however really no more then an hour is needed. If you set a lot of Snipes and find yourself with a lot of Snipe engines running simply reduce the activation period in Program Settings.

What is your Support Policy?

  1. Support is unlimited and free

  2. If you purchased the program via a distributor do not bother them with support issues as they are not able to help you and you are only delaying getting an answer to your issue.

  3. Check this page for the most common support issues

  4. Allow up to 48 hours for a response.

Do you take Support Calls?

No, not at this time. It is not possible for me to do so due to volume and my other responsibilities. Should the day arrive when I can't handle support issues I may go with a 900 support number to defray costs.

How can I help you to help me?

  1. Follow the support policies above.

  2. Read the readme file and the Help file. Read your Windows for Dummies book. Number one issue for newer users: "I don't have a clipboard" Answer: "Yes you do." Scan this FAQ for information and solutions to your issue prior to using the Q/A page or emailing me.

  3. If using Cricket Jr be quick to use the Bug Reporter as it has been designed to present an organized support structure and it will provide additional information about your system.

  4. If email contact becomes necessary tell me everything you can about the problem. For example, what were you doing just prior to the problem. Often a previous action on your part in a certain order, triggers the problem. Can you replicate the problem consistently.

  5. Follow up with me. I run between 75-100 emails a day. I do get behind and lose track sometimes. Ditto with holidays! So if you haven't heard from in two days (except holidays) after we initiate a support session, your email is buried! Or... you are an AOL user, once again the AOL mail person is not doing their job.

  6. Answer all my questions. Some answer one question but ignore the rest.

  7. Do not switch email addresses on me in the middle of a support session but if you have to, refer me to the former as I archive your issue for 3 months.

  8. Use the Reply button on your emailer when replying to me so I have a record of what we have tried. Let me be the one to delete past correspondence if they get lengthy.

  9. Finally.. Email Support is for me "shoot and forget." I shoot you off an email and I forget about the issue if I need more information and/or it appears to be a system specific issue. Unless it is a bug you have discovered, I leave it up to you to follow up with me with answers to my questions until the issue is resolved. I do not mind helping users with Non-Program related problems (New computer users) but I can't be the one to follow up.

How important are program updates?

Very! An update will almost always entail minor bug fixes that may have been introduced into the program from the last update, a feature fix due to an Ebay change or a program enhancement.

A good reason to get updates is because many of my patches are version specific meaning that one update maybe updating a former version but not the original version you have. For example suppose the version you install is 3.1.1. You skip two updates so now the current version update is 3.1.3.  There is a good chance that 3.1.3 will only update 3.1.2. If you have 3.1.1 then you may need to uninstall, download then reinstall the newest full version.

Its my policy to try to also try and introduce, improve a new feature or enhance the program with an update.

If you are a registered user, check for messages via the Cricket Updater regularly for up to date news.

What do I do if a program feature was working and suddenly it is not?

Since this is an Internet program, the problem may be due to a glitch on the Internet or with an Ebay server. If the problem continues, it may very well be that Ebay changed something that has affected the feature.

  1. If you are a registered user, check the Cricket Updater to see if I know about the feature not working

  2. If you are not a registered user, check this page and the Cricket Knowledge Base to see if I know about the problem

  3. Send me an email letting me know about the problem if you find that #1 or #2 provide no clues

I am getting an access violation when trying to install

You can usually safely ignore this error. The most common files that this occurs with is with MSVCRT40.dll, MSVCIRT.dll and Expsrv.dll

  1. Its obvious you have the file already because the error is an access or sharing violation. The file is running... thus the reason for the error.

  2. MSVCRT40.dll is an older file and the program is not offering anything new that would need to be updated as it applies to this file.

  3. Expsrv.dll is a brand new JET database file that Microsoft uses with the newest JET database engine.

The reason the error has occurred

An MFC class program was running when you attempted to install the program or if it was not running an MFC class program failed to close this shared windows file when it closed.

You have a 99.9% chance of being able to safely ignore the error and continue with the install. However, this file has a little brother called msvcirt.dll. You may receive the error again with this file because when the former is running so usually is the latter. Windows will make this sound scary to do but move along any way.

To avoid this type of error in the future

Close down every program you can find that is not needed for windows to run. Usually this is Explorer and Systray. You can find those programs when you CTRL-ALT-DELETE one time. End task on all program but the above and exit out of all programs in the task tray. (The task tray clock seems to be part of systray so don't close that one) You still may receive the error if an Operating system program is using the file.

When I execute the CJ installer, another program tries to install!

This may happen because the location you downloaded to has other setup.exe files in the directory. When the Winzip Executable fires, it somehow picks up the wrong setup.exe file. Remove the download from the directory with a cut/paste into another directory then execute it.

Back to:
Top
Category

When trying to decompress the download, I receive an error

This has been reported to occur with Windows NT but it could happen with Windows. The program uses WinZip Auto Extractor to decompress the program files and run the Set Up program. The error message that has been reported is:

program.exe is not a valid Windows NT program where "program" is the name of the program download file.

WinZip tech support states that the cause is a corrupted download and to download the file again.

I receive this Registry error message:

"Failure writing to the system registry. The registry may be corrupt, or you may not have the required permissions to write to the registry."

You may need permission to write to Registry - usually it is set by default for everyone on Windows 95 and for Administrators on Windows NT. Other possible problems you might have

Registry size exceeded the limit

You do have corrupted Registry

You have utility that monitors Registry activity (access/changes/etc.) and for some reason it doesn't allow the program installation to add/change registry keys

As the error message indicates, the problem may be due to a corrupt registry or incorrect permissions to write to the registry. In addition, the problem occurs on computers running Windows 95 when the Setup program tries to add an entry to a registry key and the key will exceed 64K in size as a result. Registry keys are limited to 64K in Windows 95.

When the problem occurs on a Windows 95 computer, it usually happens when Setup tries to add entries to the following registry key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\SharedDLLs

To determine whether the SharedDLLs key is approaching the 64K limit, follow these steps to export the key to the Desktop and look at the size of the exported file:

  1. Click the Start button, and then click Run.

  2. In the Open box, type "regedit" (without the quotation marks), and then click OK.

  3. On the Edit menu, click Find. In the Find What box, type "SharedDLLs" (without the quotation marks). Under Look At, select only the Keys check box, and then click Find Next.

  4. On the Registry menu, click Export Registry File. In the Save In list, click Desktop. In the File Name box, type "MySharedDLLs" (without the quotation marks), and then click Save.

This saves a copy of the SharedDLLs registry key to a file called MySharedDLLs.reg on the Desktop.

  5. On the Desktop, right-click MySharedDLLs.reg, and then click Properties on the shortcut menu. Note the size of the file. If it is approximately 64K in size, the "Failure writing to the system registry" error message is being caused by a limitation of Windows 95.

To work around the 64K limit, open the MySharedDLLs.reg file you created in step 4 in Notepad or Wordpad. Notice which programs have entries in the SharedDLLs key. If you notice file names from programs that you are no longer using, you may want to remove (uninstall) these programs to free up space in the registry key. If you have entries for files that no longer exist on the hard drive, you can remove the entries directly.

If you determine that the error message is not being caused by the 64K registry key limit, try the following:

  • In NT, try running Setup while logged on the computer as a member of the Administrators group to determine whether there is a problem with permissions.

  • Run the RegClean utility.

RegClean is designed to clean up unnecessary entries in the HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT branch of the registry. For more information about RegClean, see the following article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

    RegClean
  • Restore the registry file from a backup. For additional information, please see the "Restoring the Registry" Help topic in Regedit.exe or the "Restoring a Registry Key" Help topic in Regedt32.exe.

How do I update my program?

Updating requires you to download the most recent patch or the update may require the downloading and installing of a new full version of the program. Cricket Jr comes with a program called the Cricket Updater that you access via Help - Update Program from the menu.

Cricket Power Sniper version 3.3.4 is a significant update and there are not patches to update to this version. All versions below 3.3.4 will require a new download and install of the program. The Cricket Udpater in lesser versions will not update your program to 3.3.4.

If the update requires a full program download and installation, you will need to uninstall the program first.

To Uninstall: (Only if the update requires a new full program installation)

  1. If you have been utilizing the database you will need to rename the database before you uninstall the program. After saving your database (do this only if you care about it) you will reinstall a new full program download then import the old database into the new database. To import the old database, after successful installation of the newly updated program via the program's menu, click Database then click Update New Database and follow the prompts .

    To do this:

Open the program then via the program's menu, click on Database then click Compress. Upon successful compression of the database the program will make a back up of the database name oldauc.mdb. Uninstall the program. During the installation process the backed up database will not be removed. If the compression fails follow the steps below to save your database before uninstalling.

    1. Open Windows Explorer

    2. Navigate to the Drive you installed the program to. Normally this will be your C drive in the Program Files directory.

    3. Open the folder named after the program Ie., Cricket Jr

    4. Find the Auctions file

    5. Rename this file to AuctionsOLD

      1. Select the file with your mouse

      2. Right click on the file

      3. Click "Rename"

  2. Go to Control Panel

  3. Click Add/Remove programs

  4. Select the program by name Ie., CricketJr

  5. Click the Add/Remove button

  6. Say 'Yes' to any prompts that would ask if a shared file should be removed. A reinstallation will put them back.

The Installation Patch did not work

When an installation patch does not work, the easiest though admittedly not painless way to make the update is to uninstall then reinstall the program. Be sure to follow these instructions when installing a new program to make an update.

The most common reason a Patch fails is because it was installed to the default installation path of the program which is: C:\Program Files\Cricket Jr

If you installed to another drive and path you need to make sure that you adjust the default installation path in the patch.

What is the Bug Reporter?

The Bug Reporter is a separate stand-a-lone program written for Cricket Jr to make Reporting Bugs easier. The Bug Reporter will assist in resolving an issue more quickly while reducing the amount of emails that may be necessary otherwise to trouble shoot your problem.

If you believe you have found a Bug please use it.

How do I use it?

When the Bug Reporter opens, you will notice it makes some noise. At this point the program is scanning your system collecting some data that might prove worthwhile in tracking down the problem if the problem is System related and not really a Bug at all.

You will want to check off as many things that you feel may be the related to the Bug.

After Clicking the next button, you will make a detailed description of the problem and then tell me how if possible that I may be able to replicate the bug. This means that you will tell me what steps you took that seem to be triggering the problem.

I cannot get the Bug Reporter to send email

The email feature will not work with AOL and the Microsoft Net Work nor will it work with Outlook (Outlook Express will work).

The Bug Reporter makes a file so that you can attach this file to an email. If the Bug Reporter cannot launch your emailer, then you will need to make an email to me the old fashioned way... then attach the Bug Report file to the email. You can also open the Bug Report file from Windows Explorer with any text editor then paste the contents to your email.

Registering

NOTE: Beginning with the 3.2.3 version the need to obtain a Cricket Updater Password has been removed. There is no need any longer to obtain the password.

Registration Policy: Registration is a license requirement for Cricket Jr. A program is registered to one computer and a System ID number is used to identify the computer. If you lose your registration code or have problems registering and you require me to send you a new code for any reason, your request must be made with the System ID number of the computer you wish to register it on. If you have already sent me an ID number and the second one is different from the first I will decode the two numbers to ascertain if both codes come from the same computer.

If you purchased the program via Ebay at auction you begin the registration process by submitting a registration email to your seller. The seller then verifies payment has been received and will make your code for you. Be sure to allow for a few days for this process to work. Meaning do not wait until the demo expires the program before submitting your registration request.

If you purchased the program from this site, I send you a confirmation email with instructions on how to register after your payment is received along with how to obtain your password.

  1. How do I Register?

  2. How do I obtain my password? (Cricket Master Only)

  3. What is a System ID?

  4. Why do you use the System ID registration method?

  5. Will I have to re-register the program if the System ID number changes?

  6. I tried to register properly but I keep getting a Registration failed message

  7. The email feature when registering does not work

What is a System ID?

A System ID is a special serial number the program generates that identifies your computer as unique. It is used generate a unique registration code.

Back to:

Why do you use the System ID registration method?

To assist in preventing piracy and keep the price of the program low.

Will I have to re-register the program if the System ID number changes?

Only if you install the program on a different computer then originally installed or you reformat your hard drive. Upgrading an operating system may cause the program to go back into demo mode. The System ID number is dynamic meaning it will more than likely change because the security feature in the program looks to see if some criterions have changed every time the program loads.

The program has been designed so that if the System ID number does change and the program is registered, a window will pop up to alert you to this fact and automatically re-issue you a new registration code. You are advised to write this new registration code down so that if you were to format your drive you will have a current registration code.

I tried to register properly but I keep getting a Registration failed message

There are a couple of reasons that this can happen

  1. Your System Id number changed during the registration process.

    1. Compare the System ID number you originally sent me to the one currently showing on the Registration Screen

  2. The registration code is case sensitive and your name should be proper case.

    1. It is best to copy the registration code from your registration email then paste it into the registration code field

    2. The letter O and the number 0 are very similar as the small letter L (l) and the capitol letter i (I). Copy pasting is the easiest way to avoid this common error if typing in your code.

  3. I may have added a spurious leading or trailing blank space to your name when making the code. If 1 and 2 above do not apply this may be the case. If so:

    1. Do not mess around with trying to find which that I did, ask for me to make a new registration code for you.

I received an error message when the program was opening

This could be the result of any number of reasons. Usually though I have found that a shared file has failed to register correctly during the install. You may have received a shared file registration error message when the program was being installed.

This problem will require a Bug Report and a copy of the installation log so that I can determine what went wrong.

In a couple of critical areas, if an error were to occur, I have the Bug Reporter automatically load on the program start in order alert you that the program cannot be trusted to Snipe.

Cricket Jr

  1. Open the Bug Reporter via Windows Explorer if you the program would not open

  2. If the program did open the Bug Reporter from Help - Bug Reporter

  3. When the Bug Reporter finishes collecting system information click the Files Tab

  4. Scroll down until you see Cricket Jr

  5. Scroll horizontally until you see the path Cricket Jr resides. Make a note of the path

  6. Select a problem area that applies and click Next then continue with making the bug report.

  7. When ready to email the bug report you will want to attach the installation log to your bug report email

  8. The file you want to attach to your email is: St5unst.log and will be found in the path noted above in #4

  9. Submit the Bug Report

Cricket Updater

NOTE: Beginning with the 3.2.3 version the need to obtain a Cricket Updater Password has been removed. There is no need any longer to obtain the password.

This applies to the new Cricket Jr Updater version 3.2.3 (and above) You can access the Updater from Cricket Jr - Click Help then click Update Program. You can also open the Updater without running Cricket Jr by locating the drive and directory you installed to and execute the Cricket Updater executable ( you can also make a desk top short cut to this program)

In previous versions of the Updater you had to load up the updater to get messages from me. With the 3.2.3 version update, CJ will look for new messages after you use the Smart Item feature (adding an auction number then clicking the New button)

The Cricket Updater comes with its own help file so be sure to read that for the program's basic operation. Below are from the Help file and covers how to update the program or simply download a portion of the program that you wish to re-install.

There are two ways to check for updates.

  1. Click the Check button

The Cricket Updater will contact the update site scan for all available updates and compare version numbers on your system.

If an update is NOT available the Updater will disable the appropriate radio button. For each update available the radio button will remain enabled.

At this point you would select a file to update if one is available then click the Update button.

Note: When you select a file to update, the "Check" button will become the "Update" button.

  2. Select a file to update then click the Update button.

The updater will scan for just the file selected and if an update is available will proceed to download the update.

  3. You can force an update

Suppose we end up with a corrupted file or the need arises for you to reinstall a portion of the program regardless of the availability of an update.

In this case you can force an update. You do so by clicking the appropriate radio button then click the Download button on the tool bar.

With the first two methods outlined above a patch will be downloaded only if available. With the method described herein, the update will be downloaded no matter.

AOL

AOL is a proprietary program that promotes its own community and provides a gateway to the Internet. It is for this reason that you may have problems with any third party program that needs access to the Internet via your AOL phone number. CJ does not directly access the Internet via AOL but rather pushes the AOL Sign On button for you. CJ does not look for nor ask you for your AOL password. So the first thing you must make sure of is that your AOL is set to store your password.

Cricket Jr has been programmed to interface with AOL Windows 4.0, 5.0 and greater versions.

  1. How do I store my AOL password?

  2. I have AOL 5x or Greater

  3. How do I use the connection attempt and AOL time out options?

  4. I have a different AOL problem

How do I store my AOL password?

  1. If when you load your AOL that all you need to do is click the Sign On button, your password is stored and you need not go further with this section.

  2. Open AOL

  3. Click My AOL

  4. Click Preferences

  5. Click Passwords

  6. Follow AOL instructions

How do I use the Connection Attempt and AOL time out options?

When CJ launches AOL in your behalf, AOL will attempt to connect via their methods. The Connection Attempt and AOL time out options are provided to give you greater control on how many time CJ will beat on AOL's door and how long it will wait before calling it quits and trying again.

To use this feature, using your own experience with connecting to AOL, decide how many time CJ should try to connect with AOL and how much time CJ should give AOL to get on line. In some cases AOL users live in an area wherein the AOL phone number is often busy. If this is true in your case you need to ascertain how often CJ should try to get AOL to connect in addition to the default settings in AOL.

Some AOL users report that it often takes longer than a minute for the AOL connection to get established. Others report a much lower time. Here again you have control over how long CJ will sit Idle waiting for AOL to become connected.

I have a different AOL problem

You are probably out of luck... no just kidding. Send me an email and tell me about it. Be as thorough in your description of the problem as you can. Be advised that since I don't work for AOL and AOL will not provide developer assistance it may be necessary for you to sign up with a local access provider to get CJ to work for you. If this turns out to be the case you will be able to use CJ email features and still have your AOL account receive replies.

Database

Have you installed CJ and suddenly some other program that uses a database is not working correctly.. you need to install MDAC to address backward compatibility issues with the Microsoft JET database engine.

When you click the Set Snipe button, nothing happens. From the menu in Cricket click Database then click Repair. If this does not work email support noting the database repair did not work.

Dialing

With Dial Up Modems: Cricket Jr uses RAS (Remote Access Server) to interact and control DUN. This is a very powerful feature because DUN is stupid about Sniping. The most important thing to remember is that even though CJ uses RAS to work with DUN, whatever settings your DUN are using, CJ doesn't care it just triggers DUN and intercepts DUN error messages so that it can again via RAS make decisions for DUN.

When using a Dial Up Modem and you have Call Waiting you can bypass Call Waiting with a special code for example *70, ISP-PhoneNumber. You must use this feature with call waiting and Cricket or else you risk getting bumped off the NET when Cricket is Sniping. It has been noted that in Windows 98 when bumped off the NET due to call waiting Windows still thinks a connection is active and will report so to Cricket causing Cricket to not try and redial over a bumped connection.

You can make a new DUN connection in Windows or via Cricket Dial Tab in Cricket Program Settings if you wish to not bypass call waiting when you are normally dialed into your ISP. Make a new connection add the code for your area and the ISP phone number. Name the new dial up connection to something like Cricket Dial and use this connection in Cricket. Be advised that this will work only if Cricket Dialed and if you use the connection that does not thwart call waiting and are online with this connection, Cricket will not be able to recover a call waiting bump off.

For all other Connections to the NET that does not use a dial up modem (Broad Band Connection) you disable the Cricket Dialer from Program Settings (Options from the menu).

If you use any type of Firewall software you must give Cricket programs access to pass through your firewall.

The most recent version of DUN that I am aware of is v1.3 and can be downloaded from the Microsoft site.

This is because you do not have your DUN set up to remember your password and/or connect automatically.

  2. Click Connections in the menu

  3. Click Settings

  4. Imitate the check boxes and radio buttons per the graphic below

  2. Connect with Cricket Jr. The problem should be gone.

How do I set up the Back Up ISP feature?

New with the 3.2.2 version update a way was provided for you to tell CJ that you had another ISP it could use if it ran into problems while connecting. If you do not have a second ISP you can use the same ISP but create a new DUN connection with the alternate phone number. This feature is only applicable to Snipes.

Some Windows Operating Systems like Windows 2000 offer this feature with the Operating System. Use this feature if you have it for each ISP. In other words Cricket will use ISP A first and the Operating System will try numbers as needed. If you have a second ISP you can use this ISP as the Cricket Back up while having Windows dial as many numbers as the ISP provides.

  1. Open Cricket Jr

  2. Click Program Settings from the menu

  3. Click Options

  4. Click on the Dialing Tab

  5. To use the same ISP but with an alternate number:

    1. Click "Make New Connection" CJ will load up your Dial Up Networking Wizard

    2. When you are done, CJ will refresh the DUN list.

    3. Click the "Back Up" tab

    4. Select your new Back Up Connection from the list

    5. Click Save

  6. To use a different ISP

    1. Click the "back Up" tab

How do I use the Advanced Dial feature?

The Advanced Dial feature has a three fold purpose

  • Trouble Shoot Connection issues with CJ

  • Makes connection report for tech support

  • Provides the means to set up Direct Dial in numbers (Instead of DUN)

  1. Click Program Settings in Cricket Jr (menu)

  2. Click Options

  3. Click Dialing Tab

  4. Click Advanced Dialing button

The Advanced Dialer window will load. You are presented with parent and child navigational tabs. (Parent is main tab, Children are the tabs in the main tab) The Parent tabs contain "Use DUN" and "Use Direct Dial". Each parent tab has a Default and Back up tab.

To use the Advanced Dialer window to trouble shoot connections:

Note: Blocking - No Blocking - You want to use No Blocking. However if all else fails, Blocking may work.

  1. Choose a Dun Connection from the Use Dun tab

  2. To the right special instruction and notes will appear

  3. If you are an NT user a common issue is that CJ cannot find your NT phone book. Clicking the Find NT Phonebook button will show CJ which phone book you are using is located

  4. Click connect

  5. You can watch the connection progress.

  6. CJ is recording your progress and movements.

  7. You can repeat the process with the Back Up tab

Suppose you have problems with the above? You can now switch to the Direct Dial tab. You can direct dial with CJ if you do not use a proxy server. If a proxy server is used, we must use DUN for your connection.

  1. From the Direct Dial tab, enter your ISP ID, Password and telephone number.

  2. Click Connect

  3. Do the same with a back up ISP or number. (You get this information from your ISP or by clicking Properties via My Computer - Dial Up Networking - Properties)

No problems?

  1. Click Exit and you will be prompted to save changes:

    1. Save DUN - Click this button if you want save DUN settings

    2. Save Direct - Click this button if you want CJ to direct dial your ISP

    3. Exit if you do not want to save any changes

    4. You may need to restart CJ to make any changes stick

I am having trouble getting Cricket to use my DUN connection

Are you using one of those Free Access Servers? If so, your ISP may be set up so that only it can dial (like AOL) in order to force you to view their ads. I am working on providing a way to access the more popular ones.

Take a look at the Advanced Dialer FAQ If that does not work report the problem by sending me an email describing the problem.

Sniping

Be advised that if you bid on an auction early with one ID and you become the high bidder then later you use CJ to Snipe with a different ID and your other ID is still high bidder you will be bidding against yourself.

If you use one ID to bid early and the same ID later to Snipe you do not bid against yourself but there is a chance that your bid will increase by the minimum bid.

In this case CJ was able to recover and continue with the Snipe even though Ebay was supposedly down. This will not always be the case and is part of the risk you accept when you Snipe. Had CJ failed to connect on the 10 attempt, the program would have made a "cheap" assumption that Ebay was down and would have rescheduled the Snipe for the following day. It is a cheap assumption because CJ does not know what the problem really is and the decision requires you to verify the auction was indeed extended.

I am getting connection errors when the program tries to connect to Ebay

First, investigate a Firewall Issue especially if you are a broadband user. If you run Firewall software Cricket must be given permission to pass. Windows XP has a firewall. See XP help to work with this Firewall.

There are 156 possible dial up errors that can occur when connecting to the Net of which only a few are recoverable, Below are a couple of the more common errors and what they mean.

  1. 12002 The request has timed out.

    1. Usually due to a problem with your ISP, Net Traffic or Ebay is too busy. CJ will attempt to recover from this error.

  2. 12007 The server name could not be resolved.

    1. I have only seen this error once in a Bug Report. More than likely the issue is over a serious Internet problem resulting a failed attempt to retrieve Ebay's IP address, a bad or missing proxy server setting or a problem with your Internet connection. CJ will attempt to recover from this error.

      1. Check that Internet Explorer is able to access the web.

      2. If unsuccessful contact your ISP regarding your internet connection.

      3. If successful, check your Internet settings to discover if you are accessing the net via a proxy server then in Cricket Jr Options - Advanced Tab, enter the proxy name and click save.

      4. Test the program by synching your clock to see if the issue is resolved

  3. 12029 The attempt to connect to the server failed.

    1. One of the more common errors you will see from Ebay. It means that CJ simply cannot connect to Ebay and there is a good chance that Ebay or at the very least the server is down. CJ will attempt to recover from this error.

  4. 12031 The connection with the server has been reset.

    1. A very common error that means that CJ connected with Ebay but Ebay broke the connection. Assumed to mean that Ebay's server is swamped and cannot handle any more requests. CJ will attempt to recover from this error.

The Security Key was not extracted and the Snipe failed

The lack of a security key could mean there was some kind of problem with the bid confirmation. Review the Ebay message in the Snipe Log screen first thing. It may be that you changed your password or ID and did not change this information in Cricket.

First a little history on the Ebay Security Key. It was implemented in July of 1998 in attempt by Ebay to "slow" this program and others like it down. It is one of the more stupid things Ebay has done as this so called "security key" is worthless and provides no security whatsoever. When a seller lists an auction, Ebay assigns a key to the auction. When you place your bid Ebay gives up the security key. When confirming your bid the key is submitted with the bid. If the key is not present when the bid is confirmed, Ebay will not accept the bid. It really makes as much sense as a submarine with screen doors. Bottom line here is no matter how stupid it is, it is required to be submitted with the bid in order to be successful.

CJ is programmed to extract the key and Smart Snipe will monitor this closely and look for the security key before it sends in the Snipe. If Smart Snipe discovers that the input field check resulted in the existence of the key and if the key was not extracted Smart Snipe will by design re-confirm your Snipe bid in an attempt to retrieve the key.

A security key extraction failure is a very rare occurrence and is usually the result of an intermediate Pre-Snipe task failure. If your Snipe log discloses that the Snipe was lost due to a security key extraction failure you will need to send me your Snipe log ASAP so that I can ascertain why there was a key extraction failure. If you are mad, you might notify the seller that they didn't get your bid because of a stupid and worthless security key failure. You could also send an email to Ebay and ask them what is so secure about a key that they have to show in order for it to be submitted.

My Memory Load Meter is always at 100% What's wrong?

This can be the result of a couple reasons.

  • Your computer is older and is being taxed to its limits.

  • You have several programs running at once or are in need of a reboot

  • A program you use is hogging resources

  • Some computers are engineered in such a way that memory load is always high.

If your memory load is always high and you have the latest and greatest or close to the latest and greatest computer it could be that the computer was engineered is such a way as to always have a high memory load. If your Snipe is not affected by this high memory load then things are probably OK. You can disable the CJ Memory Load meter by putting 101 for the percent figure in CJ Options - Sniping tab then click the Save button.

Just because your memory is running very high or at 100% does not necessarily mean there is going to be a problem with the Snipe. It could very well be that your system resources are fine. To check your system resources:

  1. Open Control Panel

  2. Open System

  3. Click on the Performance tab

What do you see? On one of my computers, Memory load can be 100% but system resources can be at 74% free. In this case, everything should be fine. Disable the warning feature in Cricket Jr options.

If however you find that your memory load is very high and your system resources are low you may wish to consider shutting down programs you do not need to run while Sniping. Beyond what is obviously running look here:

  1. Does your Task Tray have 2000 cute icons sitting in it? If so, these are all programs that are running on your system. Really the only ones you need running are the system clock, possibly your virus software and if you use a special mouse, programs needed to run the mouse. To exit out of programs Running in the Task Tray, click on them with either you left or right mouse button and exit or close them.

  2. Often times programs will be running in the back ground and will not show up any place obvious. In this case

    1. On your keyboard, press CTRL - ALT - Delete one time

    2. Look at the list presented. These are all programs running.

    3. You need Explorer and Systray to run for sure. You may have virus software running and a mouse program if you use a special mouse. You might consider closing miscellaneous programs you do not need running. You do this by clicking End Task for each program you want to close

To prevent programs from starting when you log onto Windows, consider which program really need to be running when you start Windows. Scanner software often runs in the back ground not because it has to but to monitor scanner hardware detection software. (Lift the lid, slip in a piece of paper and the light comes on etc) You can easily close down software that behaves like this and access the program via a short cut on your desk top or via Programs when you really need to run the program.

Check START - SETTINGS - TASKBAR - Start Menu Programs tabs to stop them from starting. Other software can be stopped from starting via Registry Edits. More than I am willing to go here... consult your local computer Guru to assist you in doing this.

The Cricket Jr Memory Meter has been designed to alert you to high memory loads that could affect the program's ability to communicate quickly with Windows. It will be up to you to decide at what level you wish to be warned or possibly not at all. You can adjust the Memory Meter settings in Program - Options - Sniping Tab.

Synching Clock

At this time CJ synchs with an Atomic Time Server. It does not synch with Ebay because Ebay only provide time that is static and doing so is not reliable. CJ will however beginning with 3.1.2 will synchronize with Ebay only if the the Time Server times out when confirming the Snipe.

  1. Can I synch from behind a firewall?

  2. I get an error message saying there is a problem with hours.

  3. When I Synch, CJ changes my time but its not the right time.

  4. When I Synch, the Time Server times out a lot.

  5. When I Synch, CJ has problems getting the Official Ebay Time page.

  6. I have a different Synching problem.

Can I synch from behind a firewall?

Yes, if you System Administrator allows it to. Cricket Jr sends/receives UDP datagrams to/from port 123. In general, proxy servers allow/disallow packets in or out of your network, usually based on IP and/or Port number (services). Contact your system administrator and make sure the appropriate data is allowed through the appropriate port. In the case of Time, it must allow UDP datagrams destined for or received from port 123.

I get an error message saying there is a problem with hours.

This could be the result of a couple of things. After Cricket Jr retrieves the official Ebay time, it looks at the Ebay hour and then your computers hour. It then compares the hours with what you say is your hour time difference from Pacific Time. If the result is not a zero, the Cricket alerts you. It really does not know what is wrong. CJ does this to provide a safeguard for those that do not observe Daylight Savings Time, observe it on different days than the US or in the event your Time Zone settings are incorrect and you or somebody have adjusted your computer clock to the correct time and bypassed the Time Zone settings.

  1. Make sure CJ did not err and just report an hour difference that does not exist. To do this, Synch the clock 2-3 times to see if the error repeatedly comes up.

  2. From Options in Cricket Jr, select Program Settings then Click the Time tab. Check to see that you have correctly told CJ how many hours ahead or behind you are from Ebay.

  3. Check your Time Zone settings and make sure you have the correct Time Zone setting selected and if your state or country uses daylight savings time that this box is check also.

    1. From Control Panel click open the Date/Time icon

    2. Click the Time Zone Tab

    3. In the list box above the map make sure the correct Time Zone for your area is showing. If not click the drop down box and select the correct Time Zone

    4. You will want your clock to automatically adjust for daylight savings time because Ebay will do so automatically on you. Make sure the Automatically Adjust Clock For Daylight Saving Changes box is checked.

    5. Click Apply.

When I Synch, CJ changes my time but its not the right time.

This could be for a couple of reasons. Your Time Zone settings are incorrect or another program has altered your Autoexec.bat file to bypass the Windows Time Zone feature of your operating system.

If your Time Zone setting is correct then roll up your sleeves, you get to play with DOS. The word REM or rem are called Remarks. When you type a rem statement, it means ignore anything after the word Rem.

You want to go to MSDos Prompt.

From the Task bar, START - PROGRAMS, click on Dos Prompt

  1. When you get to DOS you will be in the C\Windows directory.

  2. Type cd\ then press Enter

  3. This puts you in the C directory

  4. The "Type" command in DOS puts a DOS program on the screen for you to view.

  5. Type in after the C prompt type: Type autoexec.bat then press Enter.

  6. Look for something like this TZ=CDT (The command TZ= is what we are really looking for) If you find it, that is your problem. You are going to have to go in and neutralize the command. If you do not find the TZ= entry from the C prompt, type Exit to return to Windows.

  7. At the C prompt type: Edit autoexec.bat then press Enter.

  8. This will open a text editor in DOS. Your mouse will work now.

  9. Place your mouse cursor just before the TZ= and type in the rem command.

  10. From the menu click File then Save, then Exit.

  11. From the C prompt again, type: Exit to return to Windows.

  12. Now synch the clock again

Proceed to the Cricket Knowledge Base if none of the above worked for you.

When I Synch, the Time Server times out a lot.

The default Time Server that CJ is shipped with may be too busy. Change Time Servers. Before changing time servers you may wish to read the documentation provided with CJ about Time Servers, who and what they are. You can access this document from the main Cricket Jr directory where you installed the program via Windows Explorer. The file name is TimeServers.rtf. If you do not remember or know how to find the Cricket Jr main directory do a file search for TimeServers.rtf.

To Change Time Servers:

  1. From Options, click Program Settings then click the Time Tab

  2. From the Time Server list, select one with your mouse then double click it.

  3. Click Save

  4. Synch your clock a few times to see if you still time out.

When I Synch, CJ has problems getting the Official Ebay Time page.

If you are not receiving a bad URL error from the program the odds are great that Ebay is having a hard time. If not Ebay then the problem is with Net traffic or your ISP.

Updating Windows 95, 98 and 98SE out of the box

If you proceed with all of this and you do not have broadband, plan on scheduling some hours to do all this... but it needs to be done.. TIP: I put the updates on a back up data drive or a CD so if I have to do an out of the box reinstall of these operating systems I don't have to go through all of this again.

From your Microsoft Browser or if using Windows 98 your START button, update your Windows with ALL critical updates available.

Update your Microsoft Browser (even if you do not use it) to the very latest... at least to Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.5 latest SP with latest 128 bit encryption service pak.

If using Windows 95 you want to install DCOM95 and if using Windows 98 NOT 98SE you want to install DCOM98 (Windows 98SE already has DCOM98)

DCOM95 v1.3

DCOM98 v1.3

If you are having problems with programs that use a database you want to install latest MDAC. For Windows 95 and 98 (NOT SE) Do not install MDAC before installing DCOM above
